Moving Forward

After discussing our options with Dr. J, we're convinced that IVF is our next step. Dr. J is concerned about me being a high risk for multiples if we were to do Injectables/ IUI. That, combined with the increased health risks and lower success rate, has convinced us that IVF is for us.
Now, our plan is to meet with a few other area doctors and see who has the best bang for our buck, so to speak. We're trying to figure out what would be the best plan for us. Should we do an Outcome Based Plan, that's more expensive, but more or less guaranteed.. sort of.. Or should we just buy one cycle at a time and hope we get pregnant on our first try?
I completely understand that my doctor is operating a business, so they're trying to make money, but we're trying to have a baby, without throwing ourselves completely into debt.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to decide on the plethora of packages are out there??

  2. Hi there -- I just wanted to pop in and say hello. We're in the midst of our first IVF cycle this month. We navigated a bunch of options, and while it turns out that my insurance will cover at least this first cycle, we had pretty much settled on doing an outcome-based plan. YMMV, though -- I know not everyone's up to doing more than one or two IVF cycles for physical/emotional as well as financial reasons.

Wishing you the best of luck as you make your decision!

  5. Hello. I found your blog on stirrup queens. I think you are very wise to get so many opinions. My husband and I made the mistake of just taking a referral from my gyno. In NY IVF is not covered by insurance anywhere. But, some hospitals offer grants. Maybe that is a good question for you to ask.

I think part of the decision depends on why IVF is needed and what the individual expectations are for success. I have unexplained IF, and my RE was fully optimistic that it would work the first or second try. I have had two failed IVF cycles with no embryos to freeze. In my case, the plan would have been wiser, but there's no way I would have know that ahead of time, and I have been paying one cycle at a time. Which is to say, I have no idea what would be better for you.

One thing I have noticed observing many others in the blogosphere is that many people treat each cycle as do-or-die, and then when people get negative results they take it extremely hard. For me, I've always assumed that it would work if I just kept trying enough times, even though I was paying one at a time. Not that I haven't been bothered by BFNs, but I think this mindset has been more helpful for me. When people buy a plan and all of the cycles fail, though, it's a similar kind of end-of-the-world feeling for people that I've seen.

Whatever you do, I guess my suggestion is not to put all of your emotional eggs in one basket.

    Best of luck to you.
